Hiv / Aids An Integral Part Of Society That Shapes The...

Public policy has always been an integral part of society that shapes the way we live and interact with the people around us. They are usually well intentioned with the goal of promoting order and safety for its citizens, but sometimes that is not the case. With the emergence of HIV/AIDS in the United States, laws have been created in order to decrease the incidence rate but has instead increased stigma around HIV/AIDS. This results in people with HIV being discriminated against by not only their peers but the government that is responsible for keeping them safe. This blatant, federally endorsed, discrimination discourages those with HIV to seek out the appropriate care that they need due to possible punishment. In the case of Nick Rhoades, the fact that he did not disclose his HIV status despite taking precautions meant that he almost sat in prison for 25 years as well as register as a sex offender (Warnke). Since the beginning of the epidemic, people affected by HIV endure chastise ment, exclusion from services and an assumption of guilt in various settings and for practices that are, for those who are negative for HIV, insignificant. The first problem that is present when dealing these laws is how they are implemented. When it was introduced, the laws focused on whether disclosure occurred at all. The act of disclosure in itself is hard to determine because many people do not have harmful intent. Criminalizing the sexual practices of HIV positive people is warranted onlyShow MoreRelatedThe Medias Dangerous Perception of the Ideal Body Image1274 Words   |  6 Pageswith questionable chemicals. Answer: Introduction The notion of the work-life balance had been introduced during the mid-19th century and besides balancing work-life, the idea of individual pleasure emerged with the introduction of the word leisure during the Industrial era (Harvard Business Review, 2018). Device free time such as spending quality times with family, talking with closed ones proved advantageous. Accordingly there are various benefits of device free time such as it helps in spending quality times with the families and closed ones without getting involved into technology (Pontes, Szabo Griffiths, 2015). Spending time with families helps in creating stronger bonds, can engage in various family activities and moreover family helps in dealing stressful situation with more ease. As per the report it has been showed that 50% of the individuals like spending time with their families more than spending time with technology (Coontz, 2016). Apart from this, device free time helps in nurturing positive behaviours within individuals by spending more time with families. Apart from this, device free time also encourage face to face communication, as majority of the people relies on techn ology to communicate with others; hence this widens the gap between individuals (Derks Bakker, 2014). Therefore, it is important to have device free time to initiate two-way conversation, as this will help to improve their social skills. It is also important to note that as work-life balance helps in providing better and healthy lifestyles to people as it helps in reducing burnouts, increases mindfulness. Similarly device free time tends to achieve all these things in a better way. People in the present days tend to more time on devices; therefore it is important for individuals to have more device free time (Mamatha, Hanakeri Aminabhavi, 2016). Once a day without the internet, helps in bringing positive changes among the individuals as individuals can devote their times on various activities that include spending time on sports, small trips and more. As per the report, the average American spends most of their leisure time by sleeping and sports. According to the American Time Use Survey, Americans tends to spend their leisure time more on other activities than on technologies and devices and 60% Americans spend their leisure time by watching TV. Prior to this, device free time enhances in creating innovative ideas and accordingly increases the productivity. Prior to that 82% individuals stated that their productivity deteriorated by using technologies and devices (Wang, 2011). People are so much dependent on technology that they seek help of the internet for simplest of the task. Therefore, device free life provides people to think more and to use their brain in a more creative way. Apart from this, device free time also helps in providing calmness to mind as constantly using devices affects the brain and thus reduces the level of concentration. Although there have been reports that using of modern technologies helps in increasing knowledge and ideas and individuals tends to spend most of their in devices. As per the recent data, it has been proved that 87% of the people of Singapore are addicted to devices, whereas, 89% of Americans suffered from body pain as a result of different sitting postures developed while using devices (Harvard Business Review, 2018). It has been stated by many scholars that use of smart devices helps in economic growth of the country. Prior to that, 59% individuals of Turkey depends on the internet for doing simplest of task, hence they are not able to develop their own creativity (Wang Wang, 2017). However, use of devices in free time alienate individuals from social activities and gatherings, reduces their creativity and most importantly affects their brain. Therefore, it is important to have device free time as work life balance, as it helps to encourage more face to face communication, spendin g more times with family and friends, reduces stress and helps to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyles. Why After School Jobs Are Benificail (Pursausive S Essay Example For Students

Why After School Jobs Are Benificail (Pursausive S Essay peech)AFTER SCHOOL JOBSIn a world where getting ahead less of what you know and more of what youve done, I think that after school jobs for students are increasingly beneficial. I dont believe the myths that with a job there is no time for school work of extracurricular activities. I am a junior, I have had jobs since I was 15, I have never had my G.P.A drop below 3.2, and I have always been involved in at least three school activities. A teenager that has a job is more apt to be taught responsibility, learns more about money and gets a jump start on the real world after high school. We will write a custom essay on Why After School Jobs Are Benificail (Pursausive S specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now One challenge that I have had to overcome, but ultimately grown stronger from is that of finding an appropriate time to finish my homework. I no longer take class time to work on my assignments for granted. While most of my friends who dont work usually go home and sit on their sofa for four hours before opening their bookbag, I have found that Friends and ER can still run their show without me watching, something I am afraid many of my peers have yet to discover. And shockingly enough it is possible to go for weeks without watching any television! Having a job has also taught me to respect authority. I have held jobs as a carhop, a waitress, and a grocery checker and sacker. Like most jobs that high schooler have, I am constantly around people. After being yelled at for undercooked steak or smashed bread, it is much easier to deal with rude people in other situations, I am much less likely to lose my patience and I understand that many problems and attitudes depend on circumstance. Many adults are also extremely impressed that is is automatic for me to address people older than me as maam or sir when I have a question or request. I think another positive was that jobs impact teenagers is that it teaches them about money. At the risk of sounding like a codjity old man, kids these days dont know the value of the dollar. I know many kids that are going to be in a world of hurt when Mom and Dad arent there with their wallet to give them money to go out or buy their clothes and CDs. I now think twice before spending $115 dollars on a pair of shoes when I realize that will cost me thirty hours of working. I also have a better idea of what money buys and what things cost. After reading countless grocery totals everyday I am very aware that if I dont land a job in collage, I will be living off of Raman Noodles and the occasional Always Save hot dog. I look at taxes much different now, before I worked I didnt understand what all of the fuss was about. But after watchin g my meager paycheck melt away more every week, I understand why sometime the certainty of taxes seems like the more appealing option. After school jobs are great to prepare for life after high school. While I believe it is important to maintain healthy social life during high school, there arent many collages or jobs that will accept you just because you are involved in every club offered. If you pick jobs responsibly, there is no reason while you cant stay active in school and work. I have not missed a football game yet in high school and I have been in every play put on by the school. Jobs prepare you for the world after school. After being a waitress I know I can find work in virtually any decent sized town in America. Because of my job I know that I cant just wake up in the mourning and go somewhere that I have not planned. Just like in the real world things must be planned weeks or even months in advance. If I need a job I know how to apply; I know how to pass an interview; I know how to impress authority figures, all skills I will need after I graduate. So for all of the teenagers and parents who try to say t hat jobs can only hurt teenagers, thats bunk! A job has taught me responsibility, helped me learn about money and prepared me for the real world. As long as students show a little maturity, there is no reason why jobs cant benefit teenagers tremendously. Social Issues Essays

Tentative and Tenterhooks

Tentative and Tenterhooks Tentative and Tenterhooks Tentative and Tenterhooks By Maeve Maddox The other day I listened to a radio interview in which the subject continually pronounced the word tentative without one of its ts. Tentative has three ts: ten-ta-tive (not ten-a-tive). Another t word that often has its medial t messed with is tenterhook. Its an old word derived from cloth-making, but it remains current in the expression to be on tenterhooks, i.e., to be in a state of painful suspense. Ive heard people say tenderhooks. Tentative derives from Latin tentatus, a form of the verb tentare, to feel, to try. Its another form of temptare, to feel, to try, to test. which gives us the English word temptation. A tenter was a wooden framework for stretching cloth. It derives from Latin tentus, stretched. A tenter hook held the cloth on the tenter. Some will argue that these pronunciations are merely differences of region or dialect. Whatever the cause, pronouncing them that way leads to misspelling them and misspelled words damage the writers credibility. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? The Effects of Bullying on Middle School Students Attendance Dissertation

The Effects of Bullying on Middle School Students Attendance - Dissertation Example according to Smith and Sharp (1994, p.64), when successful interventions and policies are designed to counter school bullying, it improves â€Å"pupil achievement and attendance over time.† Samdal et al. (1997) studied how the middle school students’ judgment and perception of school affected their academic performance, attendance and school satisfaction. They found that middle school students were always less satisfied with their school environment as compared to younger or primary school students. According to them, â€Å"The most important predictors of students' satisfaction with school are students' feeling that they are treated fairly, that they feel safe and that they believe that teachers are supportive† (p.383). They concluded that unfair treatment like bullying decreased student satisfaction and eventually their attendance. They stated that the need is to give more attention to peer-to-peer and student-teacher relationship rather than focusing more on c ompleting the curricular requirements. Doing so would help in putting a barrier to bullying, school violence, and nonattendance. Smith et al. (2004) studied the behavioral patterns shown by 406 different middle school victimized students of bullying and concluded that continuing victims â€Å"more often missed school† (p.565) than escaped victims. Newsome (2004) studied group interventions to reduce middle school students’ academic underachievement and school non-attendance resulting from bully. 26 students were given the treatment and 26 were not. He found that although those students who were given treatment improved their grades, however there was no difference or improvement in non-attendance in both the groups. This showed that bully had serious effects on students’ psychology which made them turn away... This essay declares that bullying students are normally very sociable and bold without any idea of shame or guilt; whereas, the bullied ones are already very shy and unsure which makes the overall idea of going to school and attending classes disagreeable. This paper makes a conclsuion that unfair treatment like bullying decreased student satisfaction and eventually their attendance. They stated that the need is to give more attention to peer-to-peer and student-teacher relationship rather than focusing more on completing the curricular requirements. Doing so would help in putting a barrier to bullying, school violence, and nonattendance. Smith et al. studied the behavioral patterns shown by 406 different middle school victimized students of bullying and concluded that continuing victims â€Å"more often missed school† than escaped victims. Glew et al. studied how students experienced bullying and what effects bullying had on their attendance record. The research was a cross-sectional study using school data from 2001 to 2002, in West Coast public school district. He found that attendance was the primary predictor of a child being bullied and that there was a dire need for anti-bullying implementable strategies. A similar resear ch has been conducted by Benbenishty et al. who examined the effects of bullying on school attendance in middle school Jewish and Arab students. Rigby also asserts that boys, when bullied, tend to detach themselves from social gatherings and become reserved.

Describe how nurses can become more broadly involved with influencing Essay

Describe how nurses can become more broadly involved with influencing health policy related to this childhood obesity. Include resources available in child hood obesity - Essay Example Since a nurse’s profession is related to health and well being of a person, they can guide the health policy makers in a right manner A nurse has knowledge about the growing stage of a child and knows what is needed and what is not needed by a child in terms of food and physical activity. As Per (Nurses together,2012)â€Å"The primary concern related to childhood obesity stems from the fact that obese children tend to grow into obese adults, with the host of associated health problems†. Actually the nurse can help the policy makers understand the inadequacy in the food consumed by obese kids and give an alternative for that with less calorific and more nutritional food. The nurse can inspect whether the policy makers have included the right physical activity requirement for the child. The activity must be appropriate for the child and not burdensome. In order to prevent upsurge in child obesity, nurses must suggest the policy maker to motivate the schools in persuading children to eat healthy food and accept a healthy living style. Goal Setting Worksheet Essay Example for Free

Goal Setting Worksheet Essay Review this week’s resources (for example SMART criteria, and the Career Plan Building Activities). Respond to the following in 50 to 100 words each: 1.Describe one academic goal that you have created using the SMART criteria. How do SMART criteria contribute to your academic goals? One academic goal I’ve created using the SMART criteria is trying to submit all assignments on time. The SMART criteria contributes to my academic goal by teaching me to keep myself positive. Even though I may come to a bump in the road, SMART teaches me to stay humble and tell myself that I can do it, I can achieve any goal(s) I set for myself. 2.Describe one professional/career goal you have created using the SMART criteria and Career Plan Building Activities results. How did the results of the Career Interest Profiler and Career Plan Building Activity on Competencies contribute to your professional goal development? One professional/career goal I have created using the SMART criteria and Career Plan Building Activities result was to find at least three or four people in the Healthcare Administration field, get their general outlook of the field, and see if any volunteer work is available. By doing this I will gain much knowledge, and get a chance to experience what I plan to do as my dream job. 3.Describe the stress and time-management strategies you have learned this week that will help you achieve your goals. This week I’ve learned to schedule myself to achieve any goals I set. I learned to make schedules for everything for the week and attempt to follow them. With never knowing how or what will happen throughout the week especially being eight months pregnant, writing everything down always help. For instance, to help me achieve my participation points and my discussion question responses credit, I write my responses to the discussion questions down, and throughout the week I respond to my fellow classmates responses. I do that, and then on Friday and Saturday, I type up my responses to the discussion questions and submit my homework assignments, so that’s less stress on me on making sure I receive full participation credit. 4.Describe how you will balance academic expectations and your personal and professional responsibilities. I will keep myself on a schedule, and keep myself organized to balance all my responsibilities. With academic expectations I would take at least six or seven hours out of my day a week to mainly focus on nothing but all my school work. Doing that I feel I will have ample enough time to focus on my personal and professional responsibilities. When it comes to my responsibilities, I always set aside more than enough time. I do that so if anything unexpected comes up it will not interfere with nothing else I have planned or scheduled. 5.How can understanding the importance of SMART criteria and your career interests and competencies help you move towards your career and academic goals? I feel that knowing this vital information will help me move towards my career and academic goals by motivating me. I say that because its always good to know your strengths and weaknesses. It’s good to know what you are good in or what more you can put up with, so once you get into your professional career you know what type of situations, people, and jobs to avoid. For example, if you are a person who doesn’t have the tolerance for elementary or middle school children, but your major is education, its best you get a job as a high school teacher, college professor, or work at the department of education. You wouldn’t want to get a job in the field you love, but hate the work you have to deal with, so its always good to find out what you can put up with so everyone will be happy.

social contract Essay -- essays research papers

"The current federal system of government in the United States is failing to meet its social contract obligations to the American people." There is nothing closer to the truth than this statement. While some may argue that the government is following the guidelines of a social contract, many aspects of the government have outgrown their britches and taken over. With over fifteen thousand jobs up for the taking in the government it is hard to believe that the government comprised in the 18th century is the same as the one we have now. The government has grown exponentially large since than and has created new positions and departments to "better serve" the country. Such departments include the Department of Homeland Security. Now not to trash the decision to create it; but, teenagers, such as myself, only know that this department will change a color on a chart depending on if they think it's safe or not. We have no knowledge of what it does or what it's supposed to do. Yet for some odd reason we have to pay the bills for this department through our paychecks. Shouldn't we know a little about what it does before we get taxed to help run it? How can this department better serve us if we don't know what it does and how it is helping us? The larger it grows the more money we have to pay to it, and the less independent a citizen become s. The government's main and only goal in the social contract is to protect its citizens. Yet the government seems to interv...

Assigned Seating Essay

Would you want an assign seat for everyday you sit at lunch or would want to be able to choose for yourself? In our country we have always had a freedom of choice. The topic the I am going to discuss with you is wether or not you should have assign seats during lunch. Many middle school and high school students disagree on having assign seats. Many agree with it because it is a chance to make new friends or interact with someone you usually do not. I do not think that assign seating is the best way to have lunch when we need sometime to socialize, relax and talk with your friends. For one thing, students will most likely be comfortable when they are next to people they know already. 100% of sample students polled from a local middle school stating that they were in favor of having no assign seating in the cafeteria. After all,it is quite logical that kids will feel more comfortable when they are not fretting about other things. Also, having no assign seating prepares students for the real world. Letting students choose where and with whom they are seated in school prepares them for the future, where they will have to make responsible decisions based on what is best for them, which is one of schools main ideals, or at least should be. In addition, allowing freedom can give them a chance to interact with others. For example, if you had assign seating in your cafeteria you would have to sit next to the same person everyday and you would not be able to talk or interact with different people. Also, there was a kid that was in school that had assign seating and everyday at lunch he go bullied by a kid that was in his table, and because of that he tried to kill himself. Thousands of schools participate in this program and it was successful but not in the school that this poor kid went to. Finally, having the freedom to sit where you like can give you more time to eat. For example, if there is someone in your assign seat and your not the kind of person to get in trouble, you would have to stand there and wait until they move which can take a while and it takes time away from eating and relaxing. One time there was a kid that wanted to eat lunch when someone was in his seat and they did not move, so so the kid had to wait until the other boy moved from his seat and that took up his whole lunch break and he ended up not eating at all. Having assign seating with someone you dislike or do not get along with could end up in an argument or even worse, a fight. Some of the benefits of having assign seating are that kids will not continually wander around the cafeteria looking for a seat, and chocking back tears when no one would let them join a table. Also, the cafeteria would not become ground zero for gossip, bullying, and fighting. If we had assign seats there are many different advantages concerning the stop of bullying, fighting , and arguing. Now, should kids be able to chose there own seats? if they sit in school for 7 hours and do 2-3 hours of homework per night, and even have projects for the weekends, will they also refuse kids from sitting where they like in lunch? To me , assign seating is a definite no, and I strongly disagree with anyone who says that they agree with it.

Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle Facts

Yangtze giant softshell turtles are part of class Reptilia and can be found in wetlands and large lakes in Asia. These turtles are the largest freshwater turtle in the world, but they are also on the brink of extinction. There are only three known individuals in the world: one at China’s Suzhou Zoo, another one in Vietnam’s Hoan Kiem Lake, and a third confirmed in the wild in 2018. The last known female died in April 2019. Fast Facts Scientific Name: Rafetus swinhoeiCommon Names: Red River turtlesOrder: TestudinesBasic Animal Group: ReptileSize: Approximately 3 feet in length and over 2 feet in widthWeight: Approximately 150 to 275 poundsLife Span: Over 100 yearsDiet: Fish, crabs, snails, water hyacinth, frogs, and green rice leavesHabitat: Freshwater, wetlands, large lakesPopulation: 3Conservation Status: Critically Endangered Description Yangtze giant softshell turtles, also called red river turtles, are the largest freshwater turtle species in the world. They can grow to over 39 inches by 28 inches and weigh up to 275 pounds. These turtles are gray with light gray or yellow spots. The term soft-shell comes from the fact that their shells lack horny scutes and instead is made of leathery skin. They have retractable necks and three claws on each front foot. Due to their large size and skin, people have hunted them as a source of food and as an ingredient in traditional medicine. Habitat and Distribution The natural habitat for these turtles are wetlands and large lakes. They used to be abundant in the Red River of China, Vietnam, and the lower Yangtze River floodplain. As of 2019, there are only 3 known individuals of this species. One male and one female were held in China’s Suzhou Zoo, but the female died in April 2019. One male lives in Vietnam’s Hoan Kiem Lake, and another individual was spotted in Dong Mo Lake near Hanoi. Diet and Behavior According to fishermen who caught several individuals, Yangtze giant softshell turtles’ diet consists of fish, crabs, snails, water hyacinth, frogs, and green rice leaves based on the contents of their stomachs. These turtles have slow growth, late maturity, and long life spans of upwards of 100 years. The survival rate for eggs and juveniles is very low, but survival increases dramatically for subadults and adults. Yangtze giant softshell turtles produce between 20 and 80 eggs every year, of which only a few ever reach maturity. Reproduction and Offspring Attempts to breed the male and female residing in China’s Suzhou Zoo since their introduction in 2008 have all been unsuccessful. Despite the female being relatively young and reliably producing eggs, her eggs all remained infertile. Scientists think it is because the male sustained severe damage to its shell and reproductive organs in a fight with another male years ago. Because of this damage, scientists performed five artificial insemination procedures since 2015 in hopes of procuring viable eggs. On the fifth attempt, the male recovered normally but the female did not recover from the anesthesia despite 24 hours of emergency care. The ovarian tissue of the female has been frozen for future work, but as of 2019, the last female of this species has died. Scientists are currently searching in the lakes near Hanoi to find any other potential females. Threats Scientists have determined that the largest threats to these turtles are hunting for meat and medicine, as well as pollution in their natural habitats and downstream habitat destruction after the construction of the Madushan Hydropower Dam in 2007. Breeding areas for these turtles, which include sandbars, have turned into steep slopes that make it impossible for these turtles to breed in the wild. Conservation Status Yangtze giant softshell turtles are designated as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). They are virtually extinct in the wild, with the exception of one individual spotted in the Dong Mo Lake. Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtles and Humans In Vietnam, these animals have great cultural significance as people in Hanoi revere this creature as a living god.
